Richard Laymon disappointed Spiele Affw on this one!

Perfect for the upcoming Halloween season :. I felt like I was right there at the inn with them. The only part I didt like was the chapter about Cora's vacation.

It seemed absurd to me. I plan on reading many more books by Laymon! Helen is a lifelong horror fan, but she doesn't reveal her rationale for this choice until after the five women have arrived and tried to settle in.

Laymon wonderfully blends the potentially Supernatural with an encroaching human evil and provides monsters-in-human-form who will chill the blood of almost any reader and likely bring on nightmares as well.

Aug 25, Chelsea rated it liked it. It's an ok story, some what fast read. It's about 5 girls who meat in collage and go on a trip to an abandoned lodge.

Where of course around 20 years ago all the guest at the lodge were murdered by who they guess would be the mountain people who have had trouble with the lodgers.

I felt as if this drugged the story out to add more pages a few were plenty enough to grasp why they do some of the thing they do. Anyway ,,, Apr 20, Waven rated it it was ok Shelves: horror-sci-fi , fiction , suspense.

This was my first Laymon novel, and I was not impressed. It was okay, certainly nothing spectacular, and not a ringing endorsement for the author, either.

The cover blurbs are from other writings, so he's apparently published some well-received books in the past, but Blood Games should not be included in that group.

The plot is very simple: five female friends have an annual get-together, this time to explore an abandoned resort with a bloody past, and bad things happen.

Kind of. For an almost 5 This was my first Laymon novel, and I was not impressed. For an almost page novel, very little happens, and at least half of what does happen has very little if any bearing on the actual "plot.

Much of the rest is simply filler, pointless detailed accounts of mundanities and tangential backstory with limited tie-ins to the "present" goings-on.

And a lot of nudity. A lot. I don't know what kind of women Laymon hangs around with, but he should switch to a better clientele if they have much in common with these women.

For one, they aren't very bright. Which is unfortunately common for women in horror stories. They also aren't all that well-developed as characters, even with pages of room to knock around in.

Also unfortunately common in horror stories, but hardly excusable given Laymon's plethora of opportunity. It wasn't a bad read, I just It felt something of a relief to finish and move on to a new book.

That, I suppose, says plenty. Jun 20, Michael rated it really liked it Shelves: splatterpunk. This isn't your typical Richard Laymon novel and that's not a bad thing at all.

This is more story oriented and the focus is less on the Laymon standards of gore, sex, and, violence and more on the story told through flash backs that show that Laymon was capable of crafting a solid story.

The violence is there but in the last few pages of the novel and while Laymon die hards may see this as Laymon's attempt to snag some mainstream success stateside Blood Games is a good novel.

The friendship bet This isn't your typical Richard Laymon novel and that's not a bad thing at all. The friendship between the girls is bonded through their adventures which in typical Laymon fashion are highly implausible but interesting and add more depth to the ending of the book.

While it is a bit different Blood Games is a Laymon novel that works despite it being less violent than most of his novels.

Laymon proves that he can write and I see why the reviews are so mixed. He took a gamble and Blood Games has easily become one of my favorite Laymon novels.

Not the best from Mr Laymon Creepy page turning slasher with a weird twist, but the ending was really not a surprise. Nice one :. Nov 23, Lainy rated it liked it.

My Review Five friends from college meet up every year, each year one picks what the groups does and they all go, no questions asked. This year is Helen's turn, Helen loves horror and what better choice than an abandoned lodge that was the site of a massacre.

The girls arrive and after a while they realise they aren't alone and soon fighting for their lives. Helen, Cora, Vivian, Finley and Abilene explore the lodge and go over some of their past exploits, including how they met and bonded in college.

With each throwback the reader is given a potential suspect of who may want to get even with them. Or is there something more evil lurking at the lodge?

The suspense and eerie atmosphere it present almost from the beginning, you can feel the hair standing up on the back of your neck as you get deeper into the story.

The split timeline is easy to follow as the chapters are well earmarked. There are a fair few themes in the book, mystery, horror, murder, sexual encounters, friendship, revenge and pushing the limits.

I found some of the sex stuff wasn't really required although I suppose when the group got together it brought back when they were carefree and a bit more risky.

There are plenty of creepy moments in the book , I have always loved checking out old abandoned buildings, after this I may reconsider that.

I forgot how much I enjoyed Laymon's writing, he creates characters and places that just draw you in, almost from the first chapter.

Perfect for a night wrapped up in the blanket with some candles and just freak yourself right out.

A decent slasher abandoned lodge where murders happened story. The story is a little drawn out but I liked the flashbacks to their exploits from college.

Funny thing, these girlfriends all like to shower and swim naked and take off their clothes around each other and have sex with strangers once in a while.

Pure Richard Laymon. But he throws in a twist at the end that A decent slasher abandoned lodge where murders happened story.

Ultimate girls trips gone awry! I would be interested to see this story re-written or interpreted by a female author just out of morbid curiosity.

Laymon is such a captivating author with diverse story lines. Loved this one! May 05, Louisa rated it really liked it. I thought this was a fun, classic slasher.

I found myself laughing at what was going on sometimes which probably wasn't the intention but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

There were some really creepy parts too, it was a fun ride! Jul 12, Caleb Golden rated it did not like it. So, this will likely be my last Laymon book for a good while.

Funny thing is, as I've been rereading these old Laymon novels, I've noticed that I just don't seem to enjoy them as much as I did when I was younger, and very rarely do I end up giving them anything higher than 3 stars.

The plot is simple enough, a group of women go exploring an old abandoned lodge, end up getting stranded there, a 1 star.

The plot is simple enough, a group of women go exploring an old abandoned lodge, end up getting stranded there, and have to contend with a vicious, sex-crazed killer lurking in the surrounding woods.

Unfortunately, the story took way too long establishing the characters via chapter after chapter of subplots depicting their college shenanigans.

While several of these subplots were entertaining others, not so much they did virtually nothing to move the story along. It was almost like the author was in the middle of writing a scene and thought "This is boring and drawn out, let's throw in some boobies to make it more interesting.

This book probably would've worked better had all the filler been axed and the main story itself been made into a novella because all in all, the story just didn't end up being what it was clearly trying to be.

At any rate, I still have great respect for Laymon and his work will always be an inspiration to me, but my tastes have clearly changed in the past ten years or so and I think it would be best for me to remember Laymon novels for the entertainment they brought me in the past instead of trying to relive that feeling today.

Five female friends alone in a creepy abandoned lodge, which was the scene of a grisly murder years before.

It sounds like a great setting for a scary story doesn't it? Well for the first part of the story it is with the lodge feeling very eerie and isolated.

I enjoyed the start of this book as the girls explored the lodge I felt it was building into a creepy story. Unfortunately after the climax of the story you will know it when you read it the story just petered out.

After the main tragic e Five female friends alone in a creepy abandoned lodge, which was the scene of a grisly murder years before.

After the main tragic event the girls spend there time in search of a madman but no real action takes place, and so crucially the story loses it fear factor.

Now I do not mind a bit of raunch, but the level of nudity in this book was ridiculous. Despite my opinion that the book loses pace and mystery, I still think the story is worth reading as you will get some chills at the start of the book.

Also the characters were interesting, though not massively developed. Laymon does spend time writing about the girls past together which does add more depth to their friendship and you do feel that on a surface level you know the girls.

Brave, strange and funny- Finley was my favourite, even though she became a tad psychotic at the end. Which was an unwelcome character development in my mind.

It is a real shame, as I liked the characters and the setting was superb. This book should have been ten times scarier than it was. Despite all I have said I did enjoy this book.

I enjoy the easy style in which Laymon writes and I liked the lashings of humour- just a bit more scare factor and less nudity and it would have been a better read.

Overall, I did enjoy this one. It did feel a bit stretched out though. The chapters that go back in time the Belmore girls were too many and were inserted right after cliff hanging chapters.

That in itself made me want to skip the Belmore girls chapters, so I read through them pretty rapidly, almost speed reading them. And once again, as is customary throughout all Laymon books I've read, the characters have very unrealistic reactions to pretty hardcore events I find it quite unbelievable that the four girls would make jokes and waste some time cooling themselves in a lake when one of theirs has just been violently raped, killed and cut up the way Helen has been in this adventure.

A female writer would never have made these characters get naked all the time because it simply is not realistic. Their actions are very unrealistic also Many times it felt like a secret fantasy of Laymon to write them this way.

Something I find very recurrent in his writing. I bought a load of used Richard Laymon books at a real cheap price, so I still have 3 more in my possession that I haven't read yet This one being the 4th Laymon book I've read.

I will read the ones I have, but if the tendencies continue I don't think I will read any more after that. I just don't think he was that good a writer of horror.

Jul 19, Adamus rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-i-own. That was definitely one of my favorite Laymon books so far!!

I don't remember once being bored reading this it keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time just flipping through the pages wondering what was gonna happen next.

If your a Laymon fan or horror fan in general I wouldn't recommend missing this action packed jaw dropping suspense ride!!

May 10, kas rated it liked it. I felt like I was apart of the girls group going around for an "adventure. I found that after I was half way through the book, I began to get disappointed as nothing really happened up to this point.

I think this book is worth a read. Mar 25, Kasey rated it liked it. One of my favorite of Laymon's books. I really liked all the characters.

It was much better than watching a horror movie!! I thought that it was very cool that Laymon did a past and present sections.

Jul 06, Maciek rated it it was ok Shelves: owned-books , own-in-paperback , horror , read-in It's so stupid I just had to like it.

Dec 19, Kelly rated it really liked it. The first Laymon book I ever read. This is what got me hooked on Laymon and made me spend hundreds of dollars on getting any of his books I could get my hands on.

Apr 21, Melissa ownsbey rated it it was amazing. I haven't read a book as scary as this in awhile, and this one kept me jumping!

Full of suspense and surprises, heart pounding moments all the way to the end! Jan 01, Alexandria rated it liked it.

Good book, but drags slightly in the beginning. Predictable ending. Richard Laymon disappointed me on this one!

Horror, friends at abandoned hotel, possibly dean koontz. Readers also enjoyed. About Richard Laymon.

Richard Laymon. Richard Laymon was born in Chicago and grew up in California. He worked as a schoolteacher, a librarian, and a report writer for a law firm, and was the author of more than thirty acclaimed novels.

He also published more than sixty short stories in magazines such as Ellery Queen, Richard Laymon was born in Chicago and grew up in California.

He also published more than sixty short stories in magazines such as Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock, and Cavalier, and in anthologies including Modern Masters of Horror.

He died from a massive heart attack on February 14, Valentine's Day. Also published under the name Richard Kelly Still the story is so well told that is hard to put down.

I grew up reading Bledsoe in my daily paper. I was a very young woman when his first true crime book, Bitter Blood, was published.

He set the standard for delving in and knowing the story in order to share the truth with his reader. He gives a strong sense of place as well, and most crucial, a strong sense of each person involved.

Very detailed but not overly gruesome and nicely written. I enjoyed the narrator very much, well read and he has an great accent for the story.

It's a tragedy what happened to this family but the story was told well. One person found this helpful.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. God, this was a slog to get through!! I found it pretty hard-going and not as good a read as a prior book by him I read.

I can't fault the research but if you don't know the back-story which I did as I've read another book about this case but MANY years ago you don't realise why certain chapters about some of the protagonists are featured, because you've no idea if they're one of the lawyers he's talking about or one of those to be prosecuted.

So I had to go online and look on Google to see who Bart and Neal were, for example, since he brought us all the way through their lives, and I needed to know where each featured.

So I found that highly irritating. Chris' sister Angela wasn't a nice person, either. Another waste of space. What was pretty astounding was that considering their combined intelligence, they'd not done their homework and not one realised that Chris wouldn't get any riches till he turned 35 as things stood!!

All of that Dungeons and Dragons stuff I find pretty laughable as well. It all sounds like so much guff and always seems to be played by young men who are a bit geeky.

The only person who ever really took any of these kids into hand was Christy Newsom, Bart's probation officer. Their parents paid no attention whatsoever to what any of them were up to at college There are a lot of police personnel to remember, some from a police department, some from a sheriff's department and others from the SBI.

That also made it quite hard-going for me, as I had to keep flicking back 'n' forth to see who worked with who, etc.

There are some pretty shocking errors as well which have ensured I knocked my rating down. A quote right at the beginning by Dostoevsky was credited to Dostoyevski which was pretty appalling and he also, more than once, got people's names totally wrong, which for me is always an unforgivable transgression There are some apostrophe mistakes and quite a few dropped fullstops and coining written and not coming.

Not good. I still found it most peculiar that Lieth still had a full stomach supposedly something like 7 hours after he ate.

The stress explanation for this didn't sit well with me. Seems very strange and you have to wonder about it. Considering what terrible criminals all three of these kids were as well, it's shocking Bart didn't leave more clues behind, either.

I liked a couple of great points the prosecutor made One of the defence lawyers had referred to "difficulties" his client had faced in his life and that was SO much cobblers as they had none of them ever had any difficulty in any of their lives.

They were all three rich, entitled kids out to get something for nothing, and for kicks. I read that 2 of them are now free so let's hope they've learnt their lessons.

Report abuse. This book is well written, although perhaps a bit too detailed in places with regard to some of the more peripheral characters.

It is true crime, so it is about real people, but I found it quite hard work to get to the end. This was not really Jerry Bledsoe's fault, it was more to do with the subject matter.

I simply did not find the suspects intriguing or even interesting, instead they were just dull and stupid boys who wasted too much time drinking, taking drugs and playing games.

Nothing like Charles Manson or, probably my favourite true-crime subject, Diane Downs, both of whom were complex and fascinating people.

Murder in itself does not automatically make for interesting reading, and frankly, this was a bit too dull for me.

I have read Jerry Bledsoe's other books and enjoyed them, this one I found very hard to keep on reading, after the initial intro and murder had taken placed and initial investigation in the middle of the book it seemed to just go too much over the same things and become dull and tedious to read, I skipped a huge chunk and went to the near the end and picked up there, I don't think I missed too much in-between.

This is a great true crime book, similar to Savage Son by Corey Mitchell. It is my 3rd Jerry Bledsoe book and they have all been great. What a vile son to plot his own family's murder for money!

Still think his sister may have been involved don't believe she didn't hear anything. Very detailed account of a murder within a family.

Extremely well written, with detailed backgrounds of all involved and with a true feel of the period. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
